When PC Game Pass games refuse to install, the cause is usually one of a few things: outdated Windows or app components, the Gaming Services background app, the install drive, or account sign-in. These steps follow the troubleshooting Microsoft recommends on its Xbox support site. Work through them in order and test after each one.
1. Restart and update everything
- Restart your PC.
- Install all updates in Settings → Windows Update.
- Open the Microsoft Store → Library and select Get updates to update the Xbox app and Gaming Services.
2. Check date, time and region
In Settings → Time & language, make sure the time and time zone are set automatically and that your region is correct. Incorrect settings can break licence checks.
3. Sign out and back in
In the Xbox app, sign out, close the app, then sign in again with the account that has your subscription. Make sure the Microsoft Store is signed in with the same account.
4. Check the install drive
- The drive must have enough free space for the full install.
- The drive must be formatted as NTFS.
- Try changing the install location in the Xbox app settings, or install to your system drive as a test.
5. Repair or reset the Xbox app
Go to Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find Xbox, open Advanced options and choose Repair. If that does not help, choose Reset (you will need to sign in again).
6. Repair Gaming Services
Gaming Services is the component that installs and manages PC Game Pass games. Microsoft’s support guidance covers repairing or reinstalling it through the Microsoft Store when installs fail repeatedly. Follow the current steps on support.xbox.com, as they can change between versions.
7. Look up the error code
If the app shows an error code, search for it on support.xbox.com. Microsoft documents many specific codes with targeted solutions.
Still stuck?
Check the Xbox Status page for service outages, then contact Xbox Support. Avoid third-party “fix” tools and registry hacks from unofficial sources.
